Ghorepani is a village in Myagdi District in the Dhawalagiri Zone of northern-central Nepal. It lies 17 kilometres from the district capital of Baglung at an elevation of approximately 2874m (9429ft). The village lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) and contains a number of "guest houses" that provide lodging and meals to mountain trekkers, many of whom spend the night before a pre-dawn trek to the top of nearby Poon Hill (3210m/10531ft) to watch the sunrise.

Trek to Poon Hill is easy and oddly comfortable as there are rest stops along the path and you can find the water taps on your way. There are many restaurants and homestay facilities as well where you can spend your night. The actual trekking trial starts from Nayapul, which is one and half hour bus ride from Pokhara. You can choose between two trials: either Hille-to-Ulleri-to Gorepani-to Poon hill or Ghandruk to Tadapani to Ghorepani to Poon hill. Most of them choose the former one and return via Ghandruk and then to Nayapul.

Stone trail (path) at Tikhedhunga
You will climb 2 days to Ghorepani (which used to be a rest stop where old brokers discovered water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghoda in Nepali). You will encounter dawn at Poon Hill, with stunning perspectives of the Himalayan pinnacles of the Annapurna Sanctuary, including Gangapurna, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Hiunchuli. Along the trail you will climb through bamboo and rhododendron timberland – it will be in full blossom in the spring – on the off chance that you trek the Himalaya in March-April.

From Nayapul, you should follow the stone trials that continues up to Poon Hill (except: upto Hille). Along the way, you can listen to the sound of the river, see different vegetation and wildlife, meet other hikers along with plenty of local people who are happy to greet you. In Ghorepani, where most of the visitors stop for the night, you can sometimes see the breath-taking view of Himalayas-Annapurna and Fishtail Range. You can inhale the energizing mountain air while sipping a cup of coffee- and this is the most heavenly experience you’ll probably encounter along this trip. Hiking in the serene mountains is truly a blessing and it is made even better with the presence of the Himalaya. The sense of joy that comes to you while you see the snow capped mountains is indescribable; you just feel it and enjoy it.

Although there are water taps along the way, it is better not to use the water directly without refining.
You can either use Aquatabs to refine the water.
Or, you can buy the 1 litre water bottles in the shops and restaurants on your way. It usually cost around 100 rupees.
Also, you can refill the water bottle from the hotel, and this can save a little money.

Food and Accommodation

The food along the way is quite costly due to lack of better transportation facilities. All the goods are carried either by mules or potter. The best food you can buy for reasonable price is Daal-Bhaat, which is quite delicious and you won’t regret eating. It cost around 500 rupees.
But the best way to save the money to bring some instant food with you from Pokhara or Kathmandu like: Noodles, dry fruits, chocolates, oats and muesli, can fish etc.
Accommodation is quite cheap. You can find the room with 2 or 3 beds at around 300-500 rupees.
